See the Synod, Save the Synod – A Truth at All Costs project

See the Synod is an independent, ongoing effort to document the life of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod across the United States so that well-informed Christians can take the appropriate action to correct errors and live truthfully.

This project is not backed by the Synod, or a production company, or any institutional funding. It’s a pastor’s passion project carried out simply—with a couple of cameras, a 1984 Volkswagen Westfalia, and a commitment to go and see what is actually happening in our churches.

The goal is to document the actual health of the Church—the preaching of the Word, the administration of the Sacraments, and the real conditions in which congregations live and serve.

Five hundred years ago, in the aftermath of the Reformation, church visitations revealed a gap between what was confessed and what was practiced. In response, Martin Luther wrote the Small and Large Catechisms, grounding the Church again in the essentials of the faith.

There is a growing realization among pastors and laity alike that we’re living in a similar situation today. We hear how faithful the Church is from Synod voices, but then we learn of the unfaithful practices happening in a sister church next door or across the country. This project asks a simple reformation question—not from a distance, but from the road: What does the Church actually look like today?
